KEEP Illinois Update
In June, KEEP Illinois (Keep Educators Engaged Professionally) held its first three meetings. With dozens of teachers and administrators from across Illinois, KEEP Illinois is determined to identify and promote the very best strategies and policies for the state’s communities to help teachers flourish throughout their careers. While efforts to increase and diversify the teacher pipeline are incredibly important to guarantee that all students have high-quality teachers, the teacher pipeline alone will not be able to resolve our collective needs without existing educators continuing to work in schools.

Over the course of these initial KEEP Illinois meetings, the following areas have been identified for further research, engagement, and action:

  • Coaching
  • Compensation
  • Educator Career Ladder
  • Evaluation
  • Job Satisfaction
  • Managing Multiple Initiatives
  • Mental and Physical Health Support
  • Professional Development
  • Research
  • Respect
  • Restructuring Schools
  • School and District Leadership
  • School Culture
  • Technology
  • Time
  • Working Conditions

Of these topics, Coaching, Mental and Physical Health Support, Time, and the Educator Career Ladder will most likely be the first priorities that KEEP Illinois will tackle this fall. Meetings and additional discussions and work will continue after the start of the school year. In the meantime, we are building a research base in these areas to provide a foundation for that work.

Minority Teachers of Illinois (MTI) Scholarship Applications Still Being Accepted
The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) has announced that the 2023-2024 MTI Scholarship Program application continues to be accepted, even though the March 31, 2023 priority consideration date has passed. Complete applications – including the 2023-2024 FAFSA (or Alternative Application, if applicable) – received after this date will continue to be considered for the MTI Scholarship Program for as long as funding remains after all timely complete applicants have been awarded.

All minority students and qualified bilingual minority applicants who meet the program's eligibility requirements should be encouraged to complete and submit their applications as soon as possible. Postsecondary institutions are encouraged to share this with their students, and high schools are encouraged to share this with their alumni.
