What would it take to get learning growth for every student, every year, in your school?

Welcome to the IL-MTSS Network April newsletter!

Our quarterly newsletter is dedicated to sharing the resources and information you need to achieve learning growth for your students.

In this issue – meet the director, hear from one of our district coaching partners and get resources for student mental health.

Learn more about Lori.

Lori and the work of the IL MTSS Network were recently featured in Northern Illinois University's online publication NIU Today.

Here are a few highlights from the article.

The importance of focus

“We don’t have a problem with effort in schools; we have a problem with focus. Systems coaching helps us avoid ‘random acts of school improvement’ by focusing school improvement efforts on systems that result in the desired outcomes aligned with the mission, vision, values and ultimate purpose of the district or school: student learning.”

Best practices for sustainability

“Education leaders and decision makers often assume that teachers can attend workshops, learn new strategies, and then return to their school and implement their new learning smoothly and appropriately. However, we found that was simply untrue. Individual teachers exist within a larger culture made up of school and district initiatives, grade-level teams, etc. Coaching the entire system enables new practices at every level and creates the supportive culture that facilitates success.”

The takeaway?

“MTSS helps schools work smarter, not harder, by building consistent systems that ensure that efforts are not duplicated.”

Coaching Highlight

Lyons Elementary School District 103

Meet Kris Rivera

Kristopher Rivera, currently the Superintendent of Lyons School District 103 in Illinois, has been an educator for 21 years as an EL teacher, assistant principal, principal and assistant superintendent. Kris is passionate about systems building and leadership, as well as working with culturally diverse students. Some notable trainings include Yale’s School Development program and TAP system which focuses on student and teacher advancement. Kris is currently working towards his doctoral degree. Under his leadership, Lyons School District has partnered with Illinois MTSS Network to build coherent and sustainable MTSS practices to meet the diverse learning needs of all students.

We caught up with Kris to learn more about how IL MTSS-N is helping his district better serve students.

Can you tell us a little bit about Lyons School District 103?

Our district consists of 2,179 students.  Our demographics are approximately 75% free/reduced lunch and 25% fully paid. Our student population is approximately 75% Hispanic, 19% White, 5% black and 1% multi-racial.

Why did Lyons begin working with IL MTSS-N?

Initially, Lyons was mandated to work with one of the approved supports provided by the state, so Illinois MTSS had already begun working with Lyons when I arrived at the district in 2019.

When I first arrived, there were no structures whatsoever, and Lyons had very high administrative turnover! I quickly realized the toll turnover can take on a district. There was evidence of many new initiatives that had not had time to develop. It was clear to me that we needed to continue working with Ruth Poage-Gaines, our ILMTSS-N coach, to advance the structures and services we had begun building. Together, we developed a district improvement plan, teaming structures, and began using the DCA and SAM-I to identify other areas of need to establish the foundation necessary to ensure that initiatives can be learned and practiced with fidelity.

What sorts of changes have you seen since the district began implementing MTSS?

We have had many changes! The teaming structures, DIP, SIP and long-range planning for our embedded professional development systems have proven to be successful in helping staff learn and practice the initiatives we are moving forward with in the district. We developed an instructional support system, with 45 minutes weekly dedicated for all teachers to differentiated professional development. We established a GLT time frame for weekly 45-minute meetings to support and guide the tier 2 and 3 processes for RtI. We developed an MTSS Handbook and a teacher toolbox of online resources that support our staff in various ways.

How has the systems coaching process worked in your district?

Ruth is readily available and a positive contributor to our district. Her wealth of knowledge and resources are invaluable. We work very well together, and many times she is my resource for growth and learning. She does a great job in keeping us aligned to the big picture and helps keep us from getting fragmented or falling into individual silos. Ruth assists directors and principals at the building level and district level. She is constantly championing for students to receive optimal evidence-based services. She knows our district very well and can help us see areas that we may be overlooking.

Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experiences with IL MTSS-N?

Our District Leadership Team has an immense amount of confidence in Ruth and Illinois MTSS as a whole. It’s clear that they’re committed to developing systems based on best practices. We look forward to even more learning and growth as we continue working with them.

MTSS Evidence-Based Practices

MTSS is evidence-based. That means proven interventions that you can implement at a system level. In this section of the newsletter, we’ll dive into a different evidence-based practice in each issue.

In this issue: Mental Health

The U.S. is in the midst of a student mental health crisis. As educators, we care about students’ well-being – and know they cannot learn effectively if they’re struggling with mental health issues.

Check out our evidence-based practice resources for student mental health on our website.

These include:

  • The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)

  • The National Center for School Mental Health (NSCMH)

  • The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL)

View our evidence-based practice resources.

Here are a few other resources our team recommends for understanding and responding to mental health concerns.

Don’t forget to prioritize your own mental health!

Educators are facing unprecedented challenges – and levels of burnout, stress and depression are higher than ever. Check out these resources from the National Institute of Mental Health to learn how to care for your own mental health and that of your staff.
