What we’ve been up to...

While some of you are already celebrating summer, others continue moving toward the end of the school year.

  • Career Readiness in the Middle School & Elementary School – Over the past two weeks, we continued our work with middle school and elementary school educators in the NECSS region. This work has focused on implementing career and postsecondary readiness in the middle and elementary schools for students and families directly while also examining how that work can be a driver for instructional improvement, differentiation, and even improving educator retention.

  • Thinking about Strategic Planning – As organizations wrap-up their academic year, we have found ourselves engaged in assisting with strategic planning and school improvement planning. We have been very impressed, seeing organizations connecting dots across the complexity of modern organizations in thinking about everything from student learning to professional learning for educators to funding and how all of those elements are integrated in a robust plan.

  • Collaborating across community colleges and school districts – One major theme of recent months, the past two weeks, and the coming weeks in our work has been increasing collaboration with community colleges and school districts within regions on topics ranging from educator pipeline implementation, workforce development, implementation of effective Career Pathways and work-based learning, and dual credit.

In addition to all this work, we have been paying close attention to a wide range of legislative proposals in Springfield and have continued to engage in conversations with practitioners as well as with other professional organizations regarding these proposals and their likely impacts on our collective work of supporting learners.

ISBE Training for Qualified IEP Interpreters

Supporting and engaging with families and students who are learning English is a major area of focus for educational organizations throughout Illinois, and one of the greatest barriers to success with these efforts is qualified multilingual staff members. For a number of years, the State of Illinois has required that interpreters in special education IEP meetings have successfully completed training in order to ensure high-quality interpretation and full engagement for parents in the IEP process.

ISBE is planning another round of training this summer, and this is a great opportunity for school districts, community colleges, universities, and other organizations to engage with staff and community members to become approved interpreters and to improve student learning as a result of stronger IEP processes. Space is limited in these trainings. For more information on the ISBE-approved training for qualified IEP interpreters, visit the TQII website
