What we’ve been up to...

Over the past two weeks, we’ve been engaged in quite a bit of learning internally at Northern Illinois University as we have looked closely at Community Engaged Scholarship and Community Engaged Coursework. In addition to that, we’ve been excited to be working directly with educators at all levels in-person and online throughout the state!

  • Kishwaukee College Dual Credit Professional Development Day – We were excited to collaborate with Kishwaukee College on a full-day regional professional development workshop working directly with college faculty and high school teachers on the policy background of dual credit in Illinois, how we can most effectively collaborate within the region, and how we can integrate the Cross-Sector Essential Employability Competencies in all of our classrooms in ways that are meaningful to and engaging for students.

  • Integrating Career Readiness for Middle School and Elementary Students – We held multiple online webinars with the NECSS region focusing on the needs of middle school and elementary school students with regards to how we can effectively integrate career readiness efforts with existing curriculum and instruction and do so in ways that improve engagement and deepen learning at the same time.

  • System Directors Leadership Council – We attended the System Directors Leadership Council (SDLC) monthly meeting in-person in Springfield at ISBE. At that time, we provided an overview of the results of the SkillsUSA Apprenticeship and Work-Based Learning Landscape Analysis

  • Engagement with Community Colleges to Bridge Gaps with School Districts – Yesterday, we were able to provide a presentation to leaders at College of DuPage regarding the key instructional policies that are impacting school districts and to explore opportunities for collaboration in those areas across systems. Likewise, we’ve had multiple meetings recently with community college regions regarding plans for professional development and other engagement work next year.

  • Educational Coaching Network Data Rules Book Study – Earlier this week, we wrapped up the ECN Data Rules book study. We are finalizing plans for next year, and we are very excited about next week’s ECN Conference with Diane Sweeney. We have a large group of coaches, administrators, and teachers coming from across Illinois and beyond. You can still join us – Register here

  • Release of the KEEP Illinois Defining Educator Compensation Survey – The KEEP Illinois Defining Educator Compensation Survey has been released, and responses are coming in. Read the next article for more information, and please take the survey – and then, please share it!

Defining Educator Compensation Survey —
Please take and share!

Earlier this year, we released The Road to Retention: Understanding the educator shortage and ways to engage and keep educators. This report featured four recommendations to improve retention and engagement among educators related to:

  • Compensation

  • Teacher Leadership

  • Professional Development, Coaching, and Co-Teaching

  • Culture, Working Conditions, and Wellness

We have launched a statewide survey that seeks to gather more information directly from educators of all types across all levels from throughout Illinois to better define compensation. We're hoping for thousands of responses from across Illinois, and we're currently working to build alliances with those that will be able to share out this link across schools, districts, and regions.

The survey is now open! It should take participants no more than 5-7 minutes, and it is anonymous. Please share with both licensed educators and paraprofessionals in your school districts, regions, and networks. This research will be critical to identifying meaningful targets for improving policy and/or practice related to educator compensation across Illinois.
