What we’ve been up to...

Where have the past couple of weeks gone? And, before we know it, Thanksgiving will be upon us! We hope that this busy time of year is proving to be productive for you and your students. We know that the world is causing no shortage of additional stresses on our students, teachers, faculty, and staff, and our school districts, community colleges, and universities. We thank each of you for your dedication in providing high-level and relevant opportunities for each student and for your commitment to continuing to improve schools! Over the past couple of weeks, we have been able to be engaged with and in attendance at a variety of events.

  • Wood Dale School District 7 community showing of Counted Out, a documentary about math education supported with reflection and discussion.

  • ISBE Multilingual Directors Conference, meeting with leaders from across the state about both pipeline and retention programs that can serve students.

  • NIU STEM Fest, enjoying the day out with thousands of learners of all ages from across Northern Illinois as they celebrated science, engineering, math, technology, and the arts with fun, hands-on learning experiences.

  • On the air at WNIJ, connecting the importance of news with the development and implementation of authentic learning while also supporting local journalism.

In addition to these events, we’ve continued working with College of DuPage and school districts throughout DuPage County to improve dual credit processes, we’ve been able to attend the U-46 and Alignment Collaborative for Education EXPLORE career event at NOW Arena, and today, we’re excited to be at McHenry County College working with the MCC dual credit team and high school counselors from across McHenry County.

ECN Conversation

Seeking Feedback – Northern Illinois Educators Rising Event

Through conversation between the Illinois Education Association, the Illinois P-20 Network, and the Northern Illinois University College of Education, there is a strong desire to support students, teachers, and school districts throughout northern Illinois with a regional Educators Rising event this year in addition to the statewide competition that has been hosted in Normal.

Prior to setting a date or determining the specific program, the planning group is seeking feedback from teachers and administrators throughout northern Illinois to design an event that is as accessible and meaningful as possible for students and teachers.

Illinois Resource Center

High School and Community College Educators: Register a Team for the NIU Innovation Challenge!

NIU STEAM and the Northern Illinois Center for Community Sustainability (NICCS) are excited to announce their upcoming Innovation Challenge. The goal is to provide a comprehensive opportunity for high school and community college students to strengthen and utilize their critical thinking and communication skills by collaborating with team members to solve an authentic problem.

Students will work in teams of 2 to 4 to analyze an authentic problem, utilize the authentic employability competencies, and collaborate with an industry partner to generate a solution. By aligning to these goals, the Innovation Challenge meets the criteria established by ISBE for Team-Based Challenges.

An information session will be held over Zoom from 4 to 4.30 PM on October 14. Access the Zoom information session via this link. You can also register your team directly via the NIU Innovation Challenge Registration Form

Share with physical education teachers, counselors, social workers, and other educators!

This free workshop will be held on Saturday, November 8, from 12 to 4.30 PM at Glenbard East High School.

The workshop is designed to meet the wide range of interests and varied experiences of educators who may be looking to introduce, refine, or elevate their offerings of Adventure-Based Learning (ABL).  In this interactive workshop, participants will engage in a series of activities that reinforce key ABL principles (e.g., Community Building, Communication, Decision Making, etc.) and which support the work school districts are doing with students on Social and Emotional Learning and the ISBE Essential Skills.

The agenda includes an overview and sequencing of ABL both in physical education and in other settings, including: belaying, low elements, high level group initiatives, and high elements.
