What we’ve been up to... |
As we’ve already moved into the end of the year for school districts and postsecondary institutions, culminating projects and celebrations are in full swing. We’ve also been able to engage with undergraduates on campus at NIU as they have shared their original research projects.
NIU Conference on Undergraduate Research and Engagement – We spent much of the day engaging directly with undergraduates on their original research and engagement projects – focused on everything from school law in a federal system to the differing impacts of parent behaviors across adolescents of
different genders to implementing the future of multilingual grassroots journalism today to ensuring that pregnant mothers with diabetes have healthy pregnancies to robots (of course!). It was an inspiring day with a wide range of implications for educational organizations across the P-20 spectrum. We should have made a video – maybe next year! Also, for next year, we are considering how we can engage high school and community college students in this event. If you have ideas, please reach out!
Illinois Association of School Business Officials Conference – This week, we attended the annual IASBO Conference, held at the Schaumburg Convention Center this year. With deep and wide engagement with administrators from across Illinois on everything from the KEEP Illinois Defining Educator Compensation Survey to policy conversations locally, in Springfield, and in Washington D.C., to catching up on what is taking place in districts and regions across Illinois, it was a busy two days!

Defining Educator Compensation Survey — Please take and share!
|
Earlier this year, we released The Road to Retention: Understanding the educator shortage and ways to engage and keep educators. This report featured four recommendations to improve retention and engagement among educators related to:
Compensation
Teacher Leadership
Professional Development, Coaching, and Co-Teaching
Culture, Working Conditions, and Wellness
The survey seeks to gather more information directly from educators of all types across all levels from throughout Illinois to better define compensation. We're hoping for thousands of responses from across Illinois to create the most robust and actionable definition possible!
The survey is now open! It should take participants no more than 5-7 minutes, and it is anonymous. Please share with both licensed educators and paraprofessionals in your school districts, regions, and networks. This research is critical to identifying meaningful targets for improving policy and/or practice related to educator compensation across Illinois.

Defining Educator Compensation Survey
|
Thank you to our partners at ISBE, IEA, IASBO, IASPA, and others who have helped share out this critical survey. Please be sure to share it within your school districts and regions and encourage others to take it!

ECN Conference 2025 – Varied Coaching Roles, Great Discussions
|
On April 24, 2025, coaches and administrators from across Illinois as well as a number of other states attended this year’s ECN Conference with Diane Sweeney at NIU Naperville. Throughout the day, Diane led the group through a unique and customized experience that sought to really examine...
How coaching focuses on student learning directly (and how that supports all educators in the coaching process).
How coaches collaborate with teachers.
How coaches collaborate with administrators.
How coaches support instructional improvement and the goals of more engaged, deeper learning for all students.
Coaches had the opportunity to engage with other job-alike coaches based on role and building type, and there was rich discussion throughout the day. While coaching rarely lends itself to concrete answers that are clearly right or wrong, Diane led the entire group through activities that allowed everyone to both learn from Diane directly and support one another with refining their practices.
